Women and girls, in particular, bear the burden of walking miles to collect water from streams and ponds that are often contaminated with waterborne diseases. This unclean water causes illness and robs entire communities of their health, time, and future. The Reality In many villages across India: • Stagnant pond water or polluted rivers are the primary water sources. • Families drink, cook, and bathe using water shared with livestock like water buffalo and pigs. • Bacteria-laden water leads to widespread illnesses, affecting entire villages of 1,000 or more people. Illnesses caused by dirty water are among the leading challenges plaguing these communities.
